- Trumpeter Swan.
Biologists have defined 3 different populations of Trumpeter Swans in
North America based on the breeding distribution. The largest, the Pacific
Coast Population, consists of birds breeding mainly in the Interior of
Alaska. The Rocky Mountain Population consists of 2 major breeding stocks,
a sedentary U.S. flock located in southeast Idaho, southwest Montana and
northwest Wyoming and a migratory Canadian flock breeding in northeast
B.C., northwest Alberta, southeast Yukon and southwest Northwest Territories.
The Interior Population is comprised of flocks breeding to the east of
the Rocky Mountain Population. During the 2000 North America-wide
survey of breeding Trumpeter Swans, the Pacific Coast Population was calculated
to be 17,551 individuals, the Rocky Mountain Population 3,666, and the
Interior Population 2,430 (Caithamer, 2001).
